Sister, Sister

I love living in New York, but I do tend to get a little homesick from time to time, so I was super excited when my mom and my sister decided to take trip to visit me! My sister had never been to the big apple, so I was ready to get her in a New York state of mind.
After getting a good amount of shopping, eating, sight seeing and a Broadway show into the mix, I thought the perfect way to end their mini vacay was an afternoon in Central Park. We took some pictures along the way!

Last Day in Maui

On our last day, we made our way to a tiny latino market that served food from 9am to 2:00pm. They only served tacos, burritos, tamales and tortas. I was very hungry that morning and thought a torta would do the trick, and my boyfriend decided on a tamale. My torta was overflowing with tender carnitas, melted cheese, avocado, lettuce and jalapenos. It was so delicious. My boyfriend had no complaints with his football sized tamale. Delicious meal that we washed down with a jarritos mango soda.

After lunch, we walked around a small farmers market in the parking lot of the latino market and then enjoyed a last visit to a park near the beach.

Maui part deux

My favorite part of the Maui trip was the day we went snorkeling. We woke up at 5 am and left on a boat by 6. It was a chilly morning to say the least, and the wind was strong, so the boat had to detour to a location where the waters wouldn't be too rough. We were taken to a coral reef near the coastline, so I got my wet suit on, leaped in and had technical difficulty with with my gear for the first 5 minutes, but I eventually got the hang of it. And here are some of the noteworthy photos we took with an underwater camera.

A picture of me looking not so purr-fect...haha (above ^)

Maui Part 1

Two weeks ago, my boyfriend and I barely made our flight out of JFK and back to our homeland, Los Angeles. After a few comfortable days in the sunshine, we packed up again and before we knew it, we landed at our 5 day vacay in Maui.

Our five days included lazy beach time, ahi fish tacos and burgers, mai tai's at breakfast, lunch and dinner, snorkeling at a coral reef near the coast line and a small farmers market of local fruits and vegetables.

We stayed at a condo at the laid back Paki Maui. Our mini apartment had retro decor that reminded me of what Hawaii would have been like in the 70's. It had a good size kitchen, which we thoroughly used to whip up snacks for the beach or to blend up pitchers of pina coladas. It was nice not having to depend on over-priced room service for every little thing. It also had a sweet, little balcony with a table for two that over looked a koi pond.

This was the ocean front at Paki Maui. It was gorgeous and relaxing. The purr-fect place to do nothing. Our agenda for most of the days usually included: breakfast on our balcony, lounging around at the beach for a few hours, going out or bbq lunch ourselves, then take a much needed ciesta. (It's amazing how tired you get from doing nothing! ) then freshen up and get ready to go out for dinner.

Happy as a Clam

Life's not too bad when you get to spend a Saturday afternoon at a farmers market that expands blocks and blocks; overwhelmed with fresh vegetable, fresh fruit, fresh flowers, fresh cheese, fresh everything that I'd like to have in my kitchen! So with that in mind, my boyfriend and I made it out of our upper west side bubble and headed down to Greenwich Village to see what we could gather up for a fresh dinner feast!

I was suddenly underwhelmed when my eyes reached sight of only six, small, white tents that didn't offer anything to our craving. We walked away disappointed and hungry, but the sun was out and we made our way down Bleeker Street. As we were about to settle for lunch at an indian restaurant, I spotted a seafood joint calling my name! Ever since I recently watched an Anthony Bourdain episode where he devours plates and plates of razor clams, oysters, lobster, shrimp...it's all I've been craving!

To my delightful surprise, the special on the menu was either a glass of wine or a pint of beer and a choice of 6 clams or 6 oysters for a mere $8! My boyfriend and I each had one of those and a bowl of clam chowder and lobster bisque!
We will definitely be back to devour more oysters in the near future!

House Warming

My boyfriend and I finally had a little house warming party and we had some friends try out some new dishes. It wasn't hard to decide what I wanted on the menu for our party: I've been dreaming of these deviled eggs I ate at the Spotted Pig so many months ago. I was determined to recreate them for the party...the only problem being the recipes' confidentiality. After a half an hour of research, I landed on this article that helpfully guided me through the studied and assumed ingredients used in this light, creamy, out of this world goodness.

And as a quick, easy, and may I add genius combination that I found through Giada on food network, was sliced, toasted baguette with melted gorgonzola, and drizzled with honey. The strong taste of gorgonzola was perfectly balanced with the honey. I highly recommend for everyone to try this as a quick snack or side dish.

My boyfriend took full charge of the chicken chili that simmered in the crock pot for 3 hours or so. He put everything, but the kitchen sink in this chili, it was spicy, hearty and l was happy there would be left overs for me the next day.

We washed down our meal with a homemade sangria: blood oranges and peaches marinated in Charles Shaw Shiraz, club soda, tangerine orange juice and a generous amount of 126 proof J. Wray and Nephew white rum.Tasty-- but deadly if not steadily paced. :)
